The ʹڲƱ Institute for Cyber Security (IFCyber) hosted a presentation showcase last week, highlighting research facilitated by IFCyber seed grants.

The showcase, organised by IFCyber Deputy Director Dr Andrew Reeves, brought together eight research teams from across the University.

The teams featured members from different ʹڲƱ faculties and cities, including the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, Faculty of Law, Engineering, and ʹڲƱ Canberra at ADFA.

Dr Teresa Crea, IFCyber Arts, Design and Architecture faculty lead, presented her team’s research on “Unobtrusive Monitoring of Cognitive Load in Cybersecurity Environments”.

The research draws upon experience in non-contact cognitive load measurement and considers the relationship between real-time cognitive load and human behaviour in cyber security environments, together with strategies for its monitoring.

Dr Crea said she found the showcase fascinating in highlighting how cyber can cut across many different domains.

“I think the thing that really surprised and gripped me was how many gaps there are in cyber research, and how urgent some of these things are,” Dr Crea said.

“So I think it’s a really important area, it’s fluid and it’s moving really, really fast, and the research has to keep up – we have to get ahead of the pack.

“These kinds of forums really cement the idea that we need to get research happening.”

Dr Crea said IFCyber was emerging as an important meeting place for researchers from different areas and faculties.

“I come from art and design, and to see the cross referencing from engineering and law and quantum, I think it’s an important nexus.”

IFCyber Director Debi Ashenden hoped the showcase would demonstrate the breadth of interests and different cyber security research perspectives within the Institute.

Professor Ashenden said it has been a useful step in getting IFCyber members to collaborate across academic disciplines.

“I was really pleased,” she said.

“The showcase brought all the different projects together and gave the project teams an opportunity to talk about what they've done as well as to demonstrate the breadth of interests and different research perspectives you can take on cyber security.”
