Solar Power Station

Energy affects almost every aspect of human life, from housing to transportation, and healthcare to food production. »Ê¹Ú²ÊƱ’s research is filling crucial knowledge gaps to enable the creation of next-generation materials, technologies and policies that will lead to a clean energy future.

We believe that Australia has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to emerge as global leaders in reshaping our energy system away from fossil fuel resources to clean and renewable resources that are readily available for all. Our research takes a system-wide approach across the energy value chain, with strengths in mining, energy generation and distribution, smart grids, electrification, energy storage, policy, market design, and behavioural change.

As the birthplace of modern photovoltaics, »Ê¹Ú²ÊƱ is an internationally renowned hub for renewable and solar energy. We continue to push the boundaries of PV efficiency and performance, thin-film solar applications, nighttime generation and material lifecycle sustainability. We're particularly interested in how we use renewables to produce green chemicals and fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. These technologies combined will rapidly transform energy intensive industries like steel and cement production, global transportation, and agriculture.

We recognise that technology is only one piece of the energy transition and that policy and governance will ultimately define our legacy. »Ê¹Ú²ÊƱ works closely with commercial partners and policymakers to enable long-term success at every scale, from local markets to major global economic opportunities. This means nurturing the right environments for technology to thrive, and creating policy that achieves positive social and environmental outcomes with consideration for the needs of vulnerable communities.
