  • In Australia, if you're feeling unwell or have a minor injury, your first point of contact is usually a General Practitioner (GP). GPs work in local health services or private clinics and can help with a wide range of medical issues, from common illnesses like colds and flu, to minor injuries such as sprains and cuts. They can also provide travel vaccinations, sexual health checks, and mental health support. If needed, a GP can refer you to a medical specialist for further care.

    Australia’s healthcare system includes:

    • Doctors – GPs and specialists such as psychiatrists and dermatologists

    • Allied health professionals – Including psychologists, physiotherapists, and dietitians who support overall health and wellbeing

You might see a doctor in:

    • Community settings – GP practices, specialist clinics, or private medical rooms

    • Hospital settings – Emergency departments or specialist outpatient clinics

Understanding this structure can help you access the right care at the right time.

  • If you need a medical certificate or documentation for Special Consideration, please visit the page to download the relevant form.

Students should book an appointment with their usual GP or the doctor they saw during their illness. As a general rule, doctors cannot provide a certificate for a condition they did not assess or treat at the time.

Medical certificates are not considered urgent and will be booked as standard appointments, subject to availability. Priority is given to students requiring care for current or serious health issues.
