Information & resources on navigating pregnancy and being a parent

Whether a pregnancy is planned or not, the realisation that you are pregnant can be overwhelming for anyone.
If you think you might be pregnant, book a doctor's appointment to discuss your options. Pregnancy care in Australia starts from the time you find out you are pregnant and involves regular check-ups and scans.
Not sure if you're pregnant? Visit for helpful information on early signs and what to do next.
Pregnancy care and birth is covered by Medicare for all its card holders, however, Overseas Student Health Cover policies may vary depending on the provider. Learn more.
Unplanned pregnancy
Unplanned pregnancies happen, and you have the right to make your own decision.
Abortion is legal in Australia, and the cost is supported by both Medicare and OSHC.
Your doctor can help you consider your options and find abortion (termination) services if needed. If you're looking for more detailed information, check out Family Planning Australia's abortion . You can book an appointment with the »Ê¹Ú²ÊƱ Health Service for unplanned pregnancy management.
We recognise that unplanned pregnancies and abortions can be stressful. We recommend seeking mental health support if you need it. Reach out to Mental Health Connect for 24/7 mental health support.

Pregnancy care and birth is covered through the Australian Public Health System for Medicare card holders.
Private health care is also available, which covers some of the costs for obstetricians (specialised pregnancy doctors) and birth in a private hospital. The decision to use private healthcare is a personal one and it is suggested that you compare options. Wait times exist for some policies.

Pregnancy related conditions are covered by all Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policies. If you’re considering having a baby, we strongly recommend contacting your health insurer first, as a 12-month waiting period generally applies to pregnancy and birth services.
Medibank Comprehensive OSHC
Medibank has an agreement with »Ê¹Ú²ÊƱ that allows overseas (international) students to purchase Medibank Comprehensive OSHC and receive an offer to waive the 12-month pregnancy and birth waiting periods.
Detailed information can be found through Medibank's .
A newborn can be added to an existing Single or Couple membership from their date of birth, without needing to serve any waiting periods already completed by the policy holder, provided that:
- Medibank receives the application within two months of the newborn’s date of birth, and
- The membership is upgraded to a Family membership from the newborn’s date of birth, and the Family premium is paid.
If your current membership is already a Family membership, you only need to notify Medibank within two months of your newborn’s birth. In this case, the newborn won’t need to serve any waiting periods already completed by the policy holder. However, any waiting periods the policy holder hasn’t yet completed will also apply to the newborn.
If the newborn is added more than two months after their birth, their cover will begin from the date of application (or a nominated future date), and new waiting periods will apply from that date.
Note: we recommend contacting your OSHC provider to check what your existing policy covers and for appropriate cover.
